Tillman Butler inducted into service on 10 December 1917 at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He was killed in action at St. Juvin in France and initially buried at the American Cemetery, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Meuse.
His brother Clarence F. Butler was killed in action in Fère-en-Tardenois, France and is also buried at Knoxville National Cemetery.
