Sergeant Clarence F. Butler was born in Cosby, Cocke County, Tennessee to Isaac and Ellen Butler. He was Killed in Action in Fère-en-Tardenois, France on 1 August 1918 and was interred at C,7,15, Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France. He was later buried at Knoxville National Cemetery.

His brother Tillman Butler was killed in action at St. Juvin in France and also buried at Knoxville National Cemetery.
