James Robert Huff was born 3 March 1921, Loudon, Tennessee William Ebenezer Huff and Ada Frances McCrowsky. Brother of Sgt. Henry Mccroskey Huff. He graduated at Loudon High and was a star player on both the basketball and football teams.

Pvt Huff died of wounds on 15 October 1943, occurring due to an accident at Laguna Madres Sub-Base in Bayview, Texas. A .45 cal. bullet fatally wounded him in the chest. He resided at the Army Air Field at Harlingen, Cameron County, Texas at the time of his death.
