William T. Gilbert was born on 3 December 1921, Unicoi County, Tennessee. The son of Earl Alvin Gilbert Sr. and Ida Geneva Lewis.
He died on 30 March 1943

Funeral for Private First Class William T. Gilbert, who was killed in the African campaign of World War II, will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Martin’s Creek Cemetery. A graduate of Martin’s Chapel School, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gilbert, and five brothers, three of whom are in the service. The brothers are Jesse M. and Earl Gilbert Jr., both of Eglin Field, Fla., Herbert D. Gilbert, Medical Corps, Guan, and D.B. and Kenneth Gilbert.
