William Buchanan was born in 1921, the son of Mamie Cardella Buchanan.He married Margaret G. Sullins in 1941 and was the father of Billy Jean and Bobby Buchanan.
William R. Buchanan entered the service from North Carolina. He is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery in France.

Cpl. William K. Buchanan, 23, of Altapass, killed in action in France June 26, was the son of Mrs. Mamie Biddix of Spruce Pine and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ash Buchanan of Altapass. His wife, Mrs. Margaret Sullins Buchanan and two small children, live in Erwin, Tenn. Before entering the service three years ago, he worked for the English Mica company. He attended Sunshine and Altapass school in Mitchell county, and was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist church. He went overseas in January, 1944.
