William Lee Griffin was born 16 October 1919, the son of Jessie Edward Griffin and Mary Elsie. Webster. He married Gladys Offield in 1941 and they had one son, Jerry Lee Griffin.

He was inducted into service September 4, 1944 and had been overseas since January 30, 1945.

He was killed in action March 20, 1945 in Germany. PFC Griffin was initially buried at the American War cemetery St. Avold-Metz in France.
He is buried at Knoxville National Cemetery, B, 6489
