William H. Whitson was born on 1 August 1920 in Wise, Virginia, the son of William Whitson and Edna Estep. He entered the service September 18, 1940 and went to Fort Jackson, S.C., with the National Guard. He received training at Fort Benning, Ga., Camp Blanding, Fla., and Camp Atterbury, Ind., before he went overseas in February, 1944. He was survived by four sisters, Maude, Barbara, Doris and Mrs. Julian Young; and one brother, Jack.
