Staff Sergeant William H. Martin was born on May 20, 1941, and was originally from Columbus, Georgia. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Army, with D Troop, 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, 1st Aviation Brigade, where he was an armor reconnaissance specialist. His tour in Vietnam began on March 9, 1970. SSgt. Martin was killed in non-hostile conditions on December 8, 1970, in Long Khanh province, South Vietnam. He was 29 at the time of his death. SSgt. Martin is buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 06W, Line 114.
