Pfc. Wayne J. (Salty) King, 22, husband of Mrs. Juanita J. King, Lenoir City, was killed July 21 in the invasion of Guam, according to word received by his widow from the War Department, He was the son of Mrs. Ina King, Lenoir City. Prior to the Guam invasion, Pfc. King had taken part in the Marshalls and Saipan campaigns. He was a gunner on a tank attached to an amphibious corps of the Marines. He entered service in August, 1943, and had been overseas since December. His last letter, sent from Saipan, was dated July 14. Before entering the service, Pfc. King was with TVA in Lenoir City. He was a star player with the Lenoir City high school football team in 1939-1940.
