Walter James Fairchild was the son of John Fairchild and Armilda Rice. He married Mary Ruth Webb on 15 February 1941 in Morgan, Tennessee.

PFC. Walter J. Fairchild was killed in action March 21, 1943, in North Africa. The body will arrive Wednesday June 16, and be taken to the family home in Boswell Chapel community. Funeral services will be conducted from Boswell Chapel Church. Survivors: wife, Ruth Webb Fairchild; daughter, Reba Samantha Fairchild; mother, Mrs. Arminda Hendrickson; brother, Rev. Fred Fairchild, Hixon, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Langley and Miss Verna Hendrickson, Harriman; Mrs. Grover Hicks, Yancy, Ky.
