Walter Douglas Byrd was born in 1925, Tennessee to Jeff Lee Byrd Sr. and Belvia Hall. His brother Jeff Lee Byrd Jr. died on July 25, 1944 and is memorialized at the North African American Cemetery at Carthage in Tunisia.
Pvt Byrd Died non Battle. He was struck by lightning.

Oakdale, June 29, Pvt. Walter Byrd, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Byrd, was accidentally killed at Camp Blanding, Fla., yesterday, the parents have been informed. The body will arrive in Oakdale tomorrow afternoon, and funeral services have been tentatively set for Sunday.
Survivors are the parents; three sisters, Mrs. Glen Byrd of Oakdale, Mrs. Sydney Mee of Rockwood, and Mrs. Opho Dillion of Lenoir City and two brothers, Hall and Jeff Lee Byrd, both serving in the armed forces.
