Hubert Earl Thompson was born on 18 February 1911 in Byington, Tennessee. He was the son of William Horace Thompson and Mary Belle Scates. He died on 24 October 1942 at the Army Air Base Station Hospital at Hunter Field in Savannah, Georgia. He died of post-operative hemorrhage.

The Knoxville News-Sentinel, 24 October 1942:
Pvt. Hubert E. Thompson, 32, son of Mrs. Mary B. Thompson of 1402 Western Avenue, died at 1:50 a.m. today at the base hospital at Hunter Field, Savannah, Ga., of an attack of appendicitis suffered early yesterday. The widowed mother was notified yesterday of her son’s illness and started to Savannah but he was dead when she arrived there. “Hubert was with an Army bomber squadron and liked his work fine,” said Mrs. Emma Grooms, a sister, today. “He had been in good health, wrote home four or five times a week, and his illness was a complete surprise.” Private Thompson was a grocery employee before his induction about six months ago. Surviving are the mother and five sisters, Mrs. John Tallent, of Maryville; and Mrs. W.S. Sherouse, Mrs. Herbert Green, Miss Nellie Thompson and Mrs. Grooms, all of Knoxville. Arrangements will be announced.
