Lance Corporal Thomas Gale Gaines was born on December 25, 1948, and was originally from Ludowici, Georgia. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Marine Corps, as a rifleman in H Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. His tour in Vietnam began on July 28, 1967. On February 11, 1968, LCpl. Gaines was killed under hostile conditions from an explosive device in Thua Thien province, South Vietnam; he was 19 years old at the time of his death. LCpl. Gaines is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 38E, Line 76.
