Sergeant Thomas Frederick Shipley was born on March 26, 1948, and was originally from Sale Creek, Tennessee, a small community north of Chattanooga in Hamilton County. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Army, as an infantryman in D Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade. His tour began on March 23, 1969. On November 8, 1969, Sgt. Shipley was killed in an explosion in Binh Dinh province, South Vietnam. He was 21 at the time of his death. Sgt. Shipley is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 16W, Line 47.
