Selmar Birch Welch was born in Varnell, Georgia to Charles Gaut Welch and Agatha Esther Willborn. His brother Wallace Harold Welch died in Italy in 1944 and is buried at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Italy.
S1C Welch served on the U.S.S. PC-496 and is memorialized at North Africa American Cemetery, Carthage, Tunisia
