Sawyer Patterson was born on October 20, 1896 in Rosedale, Tennessee. Patterson, of Lake City, was the son of Matthew W. and Rosey J. Daugherty Patterson. He was the brother of Forester Patterson, Pearlie Patterson, Bertha Patterson, Foster Patterson, Mallie Patterson, Dorsey Patterson, and Della Patterson. He married Lula Bunch on March 3, 1916 in Anderson County. Prior to joining the military, he was employed by Vestal Lumber Company in Briceville, Tennessee.

Pvt Patterson was admitted at the South Carolina Base Hospital at Spartanburg County on 16 November 1918 and died on 27 November of Bronchia Pneumonia. He is buried in Patterson Cemetery in Anderson County.
