Samuel Harvey Waggoner was born in Union County, Tennessee, the son of Alvis Milton Waggoner and Myrtle Elizabeth Bailey. He enlisted on October 22, 1942, in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia
He married Anna Waggoner Smith in 1942 in Knoxville and joined the 5th Army, 91st Infantry, 363rd Regiment that same year. Sam fought at Po Valley and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was killed in action at Bologna, Italy, on April 17, 1945. He is buried in Knoxville.
He was survived by his wife, Anna, and daughter, Charlotte, Fountain City; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Waggoner, Luttrell; four brothers, Claxton, Kyle and Hall all of Luttrell, and Floyd, of Corryton; and three sisters, Mrs. Arvutus Corum and Mrs. Oral Barbee of Knoxville, and Miss Faye Waggoner of Luttrell.
