Robert Sutherland Shoaf was born on 30 June 1919. He was the son of Martin Rowan Shoaf and Viola M. Sutherland. He was engaged to Mary Betty Huff.
He was Killed in Action 12 July 1944 when he was hit by a shell in the stomach in the Battle of St. Lo.

Memorial services will be held at the Anderson Street Methodist church for Staff Sergeant Robert Shoaf, the son of Mrs. Ola Shoaf of 115 Fifth street, who was killed in action in Normandy on July 12. Staff Sergeant Shoaf was one of the original members of Bristol, Tenn., national guard unit – Company D, 117t Infantry, 30th Division – which was mobilized in September of 1940 and was one of the fist soldiers from this company to be killed in action. He was a graduate of Tennessee high school, class of 1940.
