Robert Hardin McMahan was born in Sweetwater, Monroe County, TN to George Robert McMahan and Laura L. Burnett. He married Louise McLaughlin on 26 July 1932.

Robert McMahan was initially buried at Brookwood Cemetery in London, England and reburied at Cambridge American Cemetery in Cambridge, England

Lt. (jg) Robert Hardin McMahan has been killed in action according to a message from the Navy Department received by his wife, Mrs. Louise McMahan, 801 East Churchwell Avenue. He previously had been reported missing at sea. Lieutenant McMahan enlisted in the service May 23, 1943, and was sent to Harvard University for a five-week training course. Prior to enlisting in the Navy he was buyer for a Knoxville department store. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Louise McLaughlin of Erwin; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.R. McMahan; one sister, Miss Wanda McMahan of Chattanooga; and three brothers, Edward, Earl and James McMahan of Long Beach, Calif.
