He was a Karns High School graduate and attended U-T a year before he went into the Army. He had been married about 18 months. Besides his wife, he was survived by his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Hackworth and brother Steve Nelson; a half-brother, John Hackworth and a half-sister, Mrs. John Porter. Also an aunt, Mrs. Mary Ellen McBirney.

Sp/4 died in a plane crash. The aircraft crashed into a mountain in the vicinity of Da Nang, Vietnam and burned on impact.
