Robert B. Carpenter was born in Grainger County, Tennessee. Son of John Carpenter and Sallie Carpenter Brooks
He was wounded on 1 September 1918 and a month later killed in action in France at the age of 21. He was initially buried at Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Meuse, France.
