Ray Rex Smith was the son of Burl Wayne Smith and Emma Lou Hall. He entered the service June 29, 1943, taking boot training at Great Lakes, Ill. Before entering service he was employed at NARC. Surviving besides his father and mother are five brothers; Howard Smith, F.1/c, Morrow Bay, Calif.; Herman Smith, S /1c, New York, N.Y.; Roy Smith, Cox., New Orleans, La.; Eugene and Walter of Hampton; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Simerly of Elizabethton, RFD 1.

He served on the U.S.S. L.S.T. 921
