Boyd Walter Patterson was born in Andrews, North Carolina. He was the son of Sheridan Highway Patterson and Robbie Jessie Ballard. His brother Floyd Tom Patterson was killed in Germany in 1944. Boyd died at sea in 1945.
According to a 1940 census, Boyd Walter Patterson resided at Fort William Davis Military Reservation, Cristobal, Panama Canal. He served on the S/S Reaper as a fireman, arriving at New York on April 13, 1943 from the port of Aruba.
