Joseph Dwight Neal was born on 31 July 1914 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was the son of King Collins Neal and Frances “Fannie” Bowery. He lived in Piney Flats at the time of his enlistment.
He entered the service on 18 April 1941 at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia and then served with the First Quartermaster Department at Camp Polk, Louisiana. Pvt. Neal died on 10 October 1942 at LaGarde General Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He is buried at Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Blountville, Sullivan County, Tenn.

Funeral services for Joseph Dwight Neal, private in the United States army who died in a New Orleans, La., hospital early this week of leukemia were to be held at Pleasant Hill church on the Muddy Creek road this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in charge of the Rev. S.H. Garst, the Rev. E.W. Dean ano the Rev. Dan Graham.
Private Neal had been stationed at Camp Polk, La., for a year before he was stricken ill a month ago and removed to a New Orleans hospital. The body was taken to Johnson City, Wednesday and moved to the Huff-Nelson Funeral Home at Kingsport and thence to the home of Virgil Clayman, where it will remain until the funeral service.
Mr. Neal was the son of King C. Neal and the late Mrs. Fannie Bowery Neal and is survived by his father, his step-mother, one sister, Mrs. Robert Booher of Bristol, a brother, John Neal of Bristol; two half-sisters, Fay and Margaret Neal, and two grandmothers, Mrs. A.M. Neal of 2229 Anderson street, Bristol, and Mrs. Cass Bowery of Indian Springs. Private Neal was a member of the Methodist church.
