The Knoxville Journal, December 18, 1942:
Ducktown, Dec. 17 – Joseph Howell Miller, 17, who enlisted in the U.S. Marines three months ago, was killed at San Diego, Calif., while guarding a naval radio station, the War Department announced. He is the son of Mrs. Will Miller and the late Mr. Miller of Ducktown. No particulars of the death were given. Other survivors are two brothers, William R. and Hugh.D. Miller, both of Ducktown, and one sister, Mrs. William (Katherine) Sweeny, Lenoir City. The body will be brought to Ducktown Monday or Tuesday.
