Manson Mathes was born on 15 August 1922 at Cosby, Tennessee. Manson Mathes was the son of Henry “Lloyd” Mathes and Matilda “Mattie” C. Hooper. His father was murdered in November of 1922, when Manson was only a few months old. His mother married John T. “Grooms” Costner who died in 1938. She then married Odius Yarbor. Pvt Mathes resided in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania at the time of his death. In 1930 he lived at the Christ Home for Children and later with his brother John Joseph Mathes in Philadelphia.
