Luther Carroll “Cotton” Thurman was born in Sevier County, TN to Luther Clifford Thurman and Mary Amanda Moore. Pfc. Thurman entered the Army June 14, 1941. He was later released because he was over 28. After Pearl Harbor he was called back and went to Fort Sill. He once worked in Knoxville and later at restaurants in Sevierville. He was survived by his mother, a sister, Mrs. C. Darrell Smith and a brother, Revis Thurman.

He was Killed in Action, July 3, 1943. He was initially buried at the USAF Cemetery, Finschaffen #3 at British New Guinea and reburied at Manila American Cemetery, Philippines, D, 14, 138. He also has a memorial stone in the Eden Cemetery in Sevierville, TN.
