Lloyd Reece Leonard was born on 5 October 1918, in Johnson City, Tennessee, the son of John William Leonard and Laura Elmina Rominger. He was married to Elizabeth Irene Evans.

1st Lt Leonard was initially buried at the USAF Cemetery Finschaffen No. 2, British New Guinea. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County in Virginia, 34, 4108.

First Lt. Lloyd R. Leonard, 25, was killed in action on August 17 in New Guinea, a message from the War Department to his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Evans Leonard East Highland avenue, revealed. Lieutenant Leonard, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Leonard of College Heights, entered the Army on June  13, 1941. He was with the airborne artillery and paratroopers, and had been overseas since May. He had attended Science Hill High School. Survivors include the widow, his parents, three sisters, Miss Ella Leonard, Mrs. W.R. Phillips and Mrs. John M. Williams of Johnson City; five brothers, Summers and Leroy Leonard of this city, F.E. Leonard of Fredericksburg, Ga., Lester B. Leonard of Atlanta, Ga., and John Wesley Leonard, who is with the Seabees in the Southwest Pacific.
