Lester Anderson Butler was born on 7 August 1900, Unicoi, Tennessee, the son of Joseph H. Butler and Caroline Carroll.

Lester called Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee home when he enlisted in the United States Army on 9 June 1939.

After completing Basic Training, Lester was assigned to Battery A, 73rd Coast Artillery Battalion, Coast Artillery Corps based in the Panama Canal Zone, Central America. While stationed at Quiriqua, Guatemala, he came down with malaria fever and died in the United Fruit Company Hospital on 15 July 1942. Lester was 41 years old. He was interred four times after his death: 1st; Guatemala Civil Cemetery, American Vault, Guatemala City on 16 July 1942. 2nd; United States Army Air Base Cemetery, Plot 1, Row 2, Grave 18, Guatemala City on 9 July 1943. 3rd; Corozal American Cemetery, Plot N, Row 6, Grave 17, Panama City, Panama on 11 October 1946. He was disinterred the last time on 24 January 1948 and started his final journey home. Lester arrived Jonesborough, Tennessee at 9:37am on 15 May 1948 aboard Southern #46 and was meet by Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home. He was laid to rest the next day 16 May in his mother’s family cemetery.
