Lacy Oscar Smith was born June 12, 1896 in Mullens Cove, Marion County. He worked as a farmer before his induction into military service on October 25, 1918 at Camp Wadsworth, Spartanburg, South Carolina. He served with the 62nd Pioneer Infantry and died at the camp’s base hospital of bronchopneumonia. He is buried in Whitwell Cemetery, Marion County. (Photo courtesy of his grand nephew, Paul Smith.)
