Kenneth Smallwood enlisted in the United States Army on 7 April 1941 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He completed boot camp at Fort Bragg, Georgia. He was first assigned to a communications unit, but after World War II broke out, he was reassigned to Company D, 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion.

Pvt. Kenneth B. Smallwood, 31, has been listed missing in action in the Mediterranean area since January 26, the War Department informed his mother, Mrs. Minnie Smallwood of Jonesboro. Private Smallwood was believed to have been serving with a communications unit somewhere in Italy. He was inducted into the United States Army April 5, 1941, and had basic training at Fort Bragg, N.C. A younger brother, Sidney, is physical education instructor at Jonesboro High School.
