Pfc. Karl A.nthony “Tony” Brown, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Brown Jr., was presented the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart posthumously. The awards were presented by Captain Francis X.K. Connors. Pfc. Brown was killed during Operation Junction City northeast of Saigon March 29. Brown received the Bronze Star Medal for “Meritorious Achievement in ground operations against Hostile Forces in the Republic of Vietnam,” and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. He was the first of the Light Horse Assault Battery, formed as a 4.2-inch Mortar Squad in July of 1966, to be killed in Vietnam fighting. The medals were presented during brief ceremonies at the home of his parents, Route 3, Hemlock Park.
