Joseph Sidney Bachman Jr. was born March 3, 1897 in Bristol, Sullivan County, son of Joseph Sidney Bachman Sr. and Harriet Adelaide Brewer. He was a Seaman 2nd Class and died 17 October 1918 at a Naval Base Hospital in Virginia of influenza. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve at the age of 21 on March 19, 1917. According to the October 19, 1918 Knoxville Journal and Tribune, “Young Bachman left with several other Bristol boys for naval training at Norfolk about a month ago. He was educated at Davidson College in North Carolina.”
