Joseph Duncan Love was the son of William Arthur Love and Oma Peterson. He was born on 11 September 1912 in Erwin, Unicoi County, Tennessee. He later moved with his family to Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee. Joseph enlisted in the United States Army in 1938 and was assigned to Company A, 27th Infantry “Wolfhounds” Regiment, Hawaiian Division, at Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii. He received his Honorable Discharge on 20 September 1941 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Joseph returned home and lived with his parents on Route 1 in Johnson City.

Pvt. Love served in the 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division in the European Theater.

He was initially buried at Andilly Cemetery at Lay St. Remy, France and reburied at Lorraine American Cemetery, St. Avold, France, C, 8, 54

Pvt. Joseph D. Love, 32, was killed in action in France September 23, the War Department has notified his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Love, of Johnson City, Route 1. The infantry soldier ahd just returned from three years of service in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He reenlisted in the Army January 5, 1942, and trained at Fort Myers, Va., and Fort Benning, Ga., going overseas last June. Surviving besides the parents are five sisters, Mrs. Oscar Falin of Concord, Mrs. Ella Guinn, Mrs. Dan White and Mrs. Ralph Runion, all of Erwin, and Miss Jesse Love of Johnson City, and two brothers, Staff Sgt. N. Douglas Love, with the Army Air Corps in France, and Seaman Second Class John B. Love, serving in the South Pacific area.
