John Walter Mitchell McMahan was born in Newport, Tennessee.  He was the husband of Bettye McMahan and father of Joan McMahan. He was the son of Clyde McMahan and Algie Dennis. Brother of Martha McMahan.

He was the pilot on board of B-24D with serial number 41-23761 which crashed in Texas.

Sweetwater, Texas – An army bombing plane crashed and burned in a cotton field 10 miles north of Loraine, Sunday, killing three fliers. The bomber ferry command in Long Beach, Calif., listed as occupants of the plane Lt. John W. McMahan, 31, Newport, Tenn.; Co-pilot Staff Sgt. Carl R. Bosse, 22, Goshen, Ind., and Pvt. Eugene Eldon Pence, 21, Godfrey, Ill.

Funeral services for Lt. J.W. Mitchell McMahan, who died in a bomber crash in Sweetwater, Texas., Monday, have been reset for Saturday at 2 p.m. when a military funeral will be given by the Newport State Guard. The body will arrive in Newport Saturday. Lieutenant McMahan is the son of Mrs. Algie McMahan, Beverly Hills. His widow and two children have been living in Washington for the past several months.
