John Joseph Angle was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of Charles James Angle and Virginia (Jennie) Hightower. He married Jacqueline Ruth Wooten in 1938. He was a graduate of Knoxville High School and was a director of an orchestra. Before entering service Angle was an employe of the Southern Railway. He also was a musician and member of Broadway Baptist Church.
He served on the USS Achilles (ARL-41) and was killed in action at San Pedro Bay, Philippine Islands. He is buried at Manila American Cemetery on the Philippines, Plot F, Row 2, Grave 23
