Private First Class John H. Underwood was born on January 21, 1919 in Tennessee, the son of Lish Edward Underwood and Gillia Ann Combs. He enlisted in the US Army on November 12, 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.
He was killed in action on October 25, 1944 at Leyte Province, Philippines
He is buried at Buffalo Grove Cemetery in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

Pfc. John H. Underwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Underwood, New Market, and brother of Mrs. Juanita Coffman, 509 Atkin Street, has been missing in action in the Philippines since Oct. 25, the War Department has notified his family. Pfc. Underwood has been in service since November, 1942, and overseas since last March. He received his training at Gilroy, Calif. Before entering service he was an employe of TVA. A brother, Pvt. Bill Underwood, is stationed at Fort Meade, Md.
