John Henry Smith was the son of John Everet Smith and Rose Etta Herrell. His mother remarried Claude F. Miller on 12 October 1936 and the family moved to a house in Kingston. John was interested in enrolling in the CCC camp but was not quite 17 and was rejected for that reason. He had been employed part time in the Legget’s Grocery Store. In December 1940 he had enrolled in the CCC Camp
