Lance Cpl. John E. West Jr., Beckley, W.Va., a former Johnson Citian, died at Landing Zone, Dand Grift, Vietnam, last Thursday as a result of enemy action. He was a member of the Marine Corps and reportedly had been in Vietnam less then a month. A 1967 graduate of Science Hill High School, West attended Steed College here part of the same year. A Science Hill he was a member of the ROTC drill team, manager of the base ball team, a member of the SHHS baseball club and a member of the Boys’ Choir. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and of the Order of DeMolay. He attended the rank of Eagle Scout (with one palm), as a member of Boy Scout Troop 38.
He was a son of Dr. and Mrs. John E. West, 1516 Dry Hill Road, Beckley. Dr. West was a member of the Veterans Administration medical staff here for 10 years before being transferred to the Beckley facility on July 15, 1967. Other survivors include two brothers, Terry and David, and a sister, Jo Ann, Beckley; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Gordon West, Memphis; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Esther Sullivan, Memphis.
