A graduate of Knoxville High School. Member of First Baptist Church, Fountain City. He was a Sunday School Teacher in the junior department.

John Edward Trotter was the son of William Crouch Trotter and Ella Gertrude Williams Trotter. Siblings included two brothers, James R. and William C. Trotter and two sisters, Margaret Crisp and Barbara Hawkins. He was married to Yvonne P. Trotter. Corporal Trotter was a member of Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was killed in action while fighting the enemy in the Chosin Reservoir, Korea on December 3, 1950. Corporal Trotter was returned home to Knoxville on the Southern Railway and funeral services were held on February 17, 1956, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Knoxville.
