John Edwin Sharp was born at Dayton, Tennessee, the son of Charles A. Sharp and Cynthia Mooneyham. Husband of Mildred Madolyn Payton and father of Barbara Jean and James McKinley Sharp.

John Sharp served in Germany, European theater. He was Killed in Action, shot while saving the life of a fellow soldier.

Killed in action was S/Sgt John E. Sharp, husband of Mrs. Mildred Sharp, 812 Woodward Street. Sgt. Sharp was killed in action with an army unit in Germany April 26, the War Department officially notified his wife. A former Student at Rhea County High School, he was employed in Indiana before entering the army in June, 1944. He had been overseas since last December. He is survived by his wife, mother, Mrs. Charles A. Sharp, 2100 Windsor Street; two children, Barbara Jean and Charles McKinley Sharp.

Mrs. Mildred P. Sharp, 812 Woodward Street, Chattanooga, received the Silver Star Medal for her husband, the late S/Sgt John E. Sharp. The citation for Sgt. Sharp, an infantryman, stated that while dismounting from tanks which they were riding, one of the men fell and broke his leg and lay helpless in the center of a road continually swept by enemy fire. “Sgt. Sharp, squad leader,” the citation continued, “with complete disregard for personal safety, ran out into the road and dragged the injured soldier to cover in a ditch. The gallantry, unswerving loyalty to comrades in arms above and beyond the call of duty displayed by this enlisted man exemplify the highest traditions of the United States Army.”
