Joel Thomas Armstrong was the son of John Thomas Armstrong and Mary Geneva Rayburn. He was a member of Manilla Lodge No. 633, F&AM and a graduate of Englewood High School and Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens. He was very prominent in church activities. Before entering the service he was a teacher in McMinn County Schools, also employed by the Aluminum Co. at Alcoa. He was survived by his parents and his brother Lowell.
S/Sgt Armstrong was killed in action in Falmouth, England. He is buried at Mars Hill Cemetery, Englewood, McMinn County, Tennessee.
