Joe William Browning was born in Chattanooga, the son of Joe H. “Judd” Browning and Elma Cooper. He was married to Dorothy Geraldine Julian. Father of Cynthia Marie and Joe William Browning.
He was killed in action and returned from Saipan.

Cpl. Joe W.Browning, USMC, husband of Mrs. J.W. Browning and son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Browning, Stadifer Road. Cpl. Browning was killed in action in an undisclosed theater in the South Pacific, Lt.Gen. A.A. Vandegrift, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, informed Mrs. Browning in a telegram received August 28. He had served with the marine corps for the past two years, and had been overseas seven months. A former employe of the Miller Supply Company, Cpl. Browning was holder of the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in the invasion of the Marshall Islands. He was a member of the Morris Hill Baptist Church and the first meber of the church to be reported killed in military action, relatives stated. He is survived by his wife and two children, Cynthia Marie and Joe William Browning Jr.; parents, twin brothers, Frank and Fred Browning, now serving in the European theater.
