Joe Robert Cunningham Jr. was the son of Joseph Robert Cunningham and Hester Mae Hughes.

He served with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Company B of the 7th Army. He was killed in action.

Pfc. Joe R. Cunningham Jr., 21, previously reported missing in action, has been reported killed in action on Aug. 28 in France, according to information received here this morning from the War Department. Pfc. Cunningham is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Cunningham of the Brayton Community near Dayton. He was in the infantry and had been in the service since June 24, 1943. He had been in Italy on the Anzio Beachhead. He was in south France only 13 days when killed. Besides his parents he is survived by twin brother, Wayne Arle Cunningham and Wade Earl Cunningham, who are now in the U.S. Army in France.
