James William Robbins was born on 21 December 1913 in Cleveland, Tennessee, the son of William Harrison Robbins and Nora Frances Penland. He was married to Viola Beatrice Day. He resided at Walker County, Georgia at the time of his enlistment.
He was killed in action on 7 October 1944 in Germany.

The bodyof Pvt. James W. Robbins, 31, of LaFayette, Ga., killed Oct. 2, 1944. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Viola D. Robbins; son, Jimmie, LaFayette; father, William H. Robbins, Chattanooga; brother, Forrest, Athens, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Lapiana, Mrs. Betty Dodson, Washington, D.C. The body will be at the residence of Gilbert Lane, LaFayette, until hour of the service at the Second Baptist Church. Interment in LaFayette Cemetery, Wallis & Son, LaFayette, in charge.
