Mrs. James W. Munsey, Jr., 203 Broad street, received word that her husband, James William Munsey Jr., of the U.S. Navy, was killed in action April 15, 1944 in the Alaskan area. Munsey, age 25, was a third class signalman in the Navy Construction Battalion. He was due home next month. He was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, but has spent most of his life in Elizabethton. He is a graduate of the Elizabethton High School where he was a popular member of the state champion Cyclone football of 1939 and received one of the medals given the member of the state championship team. James volunteered with the Navy Construction Battalion in November, 1942, and was assigned to the Navy Signalman School, Camp Endicott, Providence, R.I., in January 1943. On May 23, 1943, he went overseas where he has been in the Alaskan area. Prior to volunteering in the Navy, he was employed at the North American Rayon Corporation.
Survivors are his wife, the former Jessie Cray of this city; his father, James W. Munsey Sr. of Grundy, Virginia; one sister, Mrs. Robert McMullen, Brooklyn, N.Y.; one aunt, Mrs. Ida Pearl Grim of this city. His cousin, Sgt Ernie Grim also of this city is staitoned at Camp Howze, Texas.
