Pvt Chancey was a resident of Polk County, Tennessee and enlisted on 4 September 1940 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, George. He died on Omaha Beach, with the 112th Engineers. Mine explosion.

Pvt James Chancey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Haskin Chancey, of Atco, has been missing in action since June 6 in France. This is the fourth invasion in which Pvt. Chancey, who has been overseas for two years, has taken part. The others were North African, Sicilian and Italian invasions. Previously with a tank division, he was transferred to England two months before the invasion in France, where he joined the engineers. Prior to joining the Army four years ago, Pvt. Chancey was with his father in business in McCaysville, Ga. He has two brothers in service; Pvt. Clarence Chancey, of Camp Shelby, Miss. And Pvt. Almond Chancey, of Camp Blanding, Florida.
