Lt James Robert Griswold was the son of Dillard Houston Griswold and Hassie Anna Gibbs. Husband of Kathrine Sarles Durstine

Lt. Griswold was shipped aboard the Essex Class Carrier USS Franklin CV-13.

On the 19th of March 1945, The Franklin was off the Coast of Honshu when a Japanese plane dropped out of the clouds and dropped bombs on her deck. Lt Griswold was killed in action 19th of March 1945. He is memorialized at Honolulu.

Lt. James R. Griswold of the navy, husband of Mrs. James R. Griswold and father of James Jr. of the Fort Woods Apartments, was reported killed in action in the Pacific on an undisclosed date. He is the son of D.H. Griswold, 1656 Riverview Road, president of the American Trust and Banking Company. Lt. Griswold was assistant trust Officer of the American Trust and Banking Company before he was given a leave of absence from the bank to enter the navy in 1942. A graduate of Phillips Andover School and of Yale University, he entered the navy as a lieutenant, junior grade, and later was promoted to the rank of full lieutenant. Lt. Griswold was prominent in business and social life of Chattanooga. He was a member of the Mountain City Club and the Chattanooga Gold and Country Club. He trained at Quonset Point, R.I., and attended radar school at Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to sea duty in 1943 and was on sea duty until he was killed. He was buried at sea with full military honors. He is survived by his wife and son; his father; one sister, Mrs. J.P. Rickman; one brother, Dillard Griswold; his aunt, Miss Dura Griswold and his grandmother, Mrs. E.N. Griswold.
