James Robert Gregg was born on 12 August 1911 at Keokee, Virginia, the son of John Gregg. He was the husband of Mary Louise Peek.
He entered the service in October, 1943, receiving his training at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., Camp Shelby, Miss., Camp Wheeler, Ga., and Fort George Meade, Md. He was then stationed in England before taking part in the invasion of France. He was a graduate of Knoxville high School and attended the Georgia Military academy and Draughton business college in Knoxville. He had been employed by the Stone and Webster company of Clifton, Tenn. He died 21 June 1944 of wounds received the previous day.

The body of Pvt. James R. Gregg, who was killed in France during World War II, arrived in Greeneville and was escorted by a VFW Color Guard to the Kiser Funeral Home. The funeral was held at Piney Grove Church. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. His closest relatives are one uncle, Ulysses Gregg, and two aunts, Mrs. Mary Inscore and Mrs. Ethel Lauderdale.
