James Ledford Evans was born at Butler, Tennessee, the son of Samuel Squire Evans and Rebecca Lucinda Church.
Private First Class James L. Evans, US Army, was assigned to the 289th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division. The 75th arrived in Europe in November 1944, and with no time spent on the line went directly into combat to stop the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forest, Belgium. It was during this action that PFC Evans was killed in action on 17 January 1945. He was interred at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Belgium, B,2,46. Awards include the Purple Heart.

The War Department has notified Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Evans of Butler their son, Pfc. James L. Evans, 19, was killed in action in Belgium January 17. Private Evans was inducted into the Army July 17, 1943, and trained in the states at Camp Haan, Calif. Surviving besides his parents are three brothers, Leslie of Akron, Ohio, Clyde of 207 East Poplar street, Johnston City, and Cpl. Parris Sammie Evans, serving in the Pacific theater of operations, and three sisters, Mrs. Dessree Gregg of Butler, Mrs. Cloyce Stout of Hampton and Mrs. Leona Street of Johnson City, route 5.
